Rhine Gorge

  • Total 1365km
  • Today 67km
  • Mainz to Grundenbach
  • Mostly sunny, high 29c

Easy downwind ride today. We made good time until we stopped for gelato in Oberwesel. When we started out again for the short distance to our campsite we had a bit of a headwind.

Pfalzgrafenstein Castle.
Stahleck Castle.

Komoot likes to route along backroads, not taking into consideration how much hill it involves. It routed us up over a very steep hill, and back down again almost to almost the same elevation. However, it did give us a great view of one of Rheinfels Castle that wouldn’t have had from the lower road. On the return ride we’ll use the main road which is a gentle grade back down to the Rhine.

Lunch on The Rhine.
Rheinfels Castle.

The Loire a Velo and the Rhine Gorge are two rides that should be on every cyclist’s bucket list. It would be hard to say which ride has more awe inspiring scenery. So much history along both routes.

Along the Rhine Gorge the castles are ancient and numerous, and vineyards cover the hillsides.

It could be done in a cruise ship of course, but there’s something about the freedom of bike touring, and the effort put in to get here that makes everything so much more special.
