We’re staying two days at the final campground for this trip. It’s pretty typical of the campgrounds we’ve found in Germany and Holland, super sized and packed like sardines. There have been some gems along the way, and we sure enjoy it when we happen upon one, but we build our itinerary based on where we want to go rather than the type of campsite.

Perhaps with a bit more research we’d be able to find more natural campsites. This one said it was in a forest, and sure enough it is, but the campground itself is uninspiring.

Anyway, a tour in Europe is less about the camping and more about the places we see and the people we meet, which has been an excellent experience!

Tomorrow we’ll ride in and explore Amsterdam which is about 10 kilometers to the inner city. With the sightseeing we plan to do, we’ll most likely put on 30 to 40 kilometers.

The day after tomorrow we have about a 10 kilometer ride to Schiphol Airport where we fly home at 15:20. We’ve been able to see the planes flying over us to and from Schiphol for days, and we can feel the finality of our trip as we get closer to the airport. We’re now camped close enough to hear the planes engage their reverse thrust.

We can’t believe we’re going home already, and the prospect is greeted with mixed emotions. A lot of the trip has been hard work, particularly since we were each sick for over 3 weeks in France, but as always, completing a challenge is a great reward… and is perhaps addictive!

For now we’re content to be going home for a rest, however neither of us is willing to let the fitness level we’ve developed in the past 7 week slip away. We plan to do some smaller tours back home, and look forward to packing much lighter now that we’ve learned what is truly a necessity on a tour. Much of what we brought wasn’t even touched!

Cute little rental huts in the campground.
