Chris and Sarah went back to their new home in Scotland, leaving us to carry on alone once again. It has been great to spend time with them, and we’ve had tons of fun. My beer consumption will drop considerably now Chris is no longer riding with us.
It was a short ride into town for a coffee, and to discuss what we should do next. The Rhine has become very industrial this far downstream and we were looking for ways to maximize our time in the Netherlands.
It was decided that we would ride to the train station in Dormagen, and see if we would be able to catch a train to Arnhem. After a bit of digging, the very helpful agent was able to print out multiple travel plans and sell us tickets. We caught the local train to Dusseldorf where we switched to a train to Arnhem. It all went off without a hitch, and since we were some of the first people on, we were able to get our bikes nicely snuggled into the small bike area.
This has been a good move. The Netherlands is a cycling country. We weren’t quite ready for the cycling traffic, with merges and intersections. We had to stay on our toes while we were in town, but traffic quickly settled down once we were in the country.

Our plan now is to do as much of the south end of the Ronde van Nederland route that we have time to complete. We’ll have to cheat a bit since we won’t have time to cover the whole distance and still enjoy it.

Our first night in the Netherlands is at a great campground run by a cyclist and world traveler. As we were preparing to set up our tent he brought us an ice cold sparkling water and a slice of cake. Very nice!
It’s very clean and quiet, and everyone here is extremely friendly.
