The ride to Nijmegen was mostly on the top of dikes on roads shared with vehicles. Really only one lane wide, but the drivers are mostly courteous.

We stopped for lunch at a cafe on the. Banks of the Waal, which is the main branch of the Rhine as it flows across the Netherlands.

After lunch we headed through the city to stop at Decathlon to pick up some stove fuel. With it being Saturday, there was a market in the street in front of the store, and it was packed with people. There were all kinds of goodies for sale, but we were too full from lunch to sample anything. 🙁

On the way to the campground we stopped for groceries, and while I waited outside I noticed a couple of things.
First, many Dutch use their bikes like North Americans use their cars. The bike parking area is a busy place.
Second, very few Dutch people that we’ve seen smoke. Everywhere else that we’ve been in Europe smoking is everywhere. It starts as soon as you get off the plane, and is almost impossible to get away from, you just get used to it. Standing outside the store I saw nobody smoking. In France and Germany there would have been a steady stream of people lighting up as they exited the building. I hope this continues.
The campground host was nice enough to give us a spot in the shade of the barn, otherwise it is just an open field full of RVs. Very different from the last campground. When you travel by bike you never know what you’re going to get. We mostly just pick a campground that coincides with the distance we want to travel that day, and it can be slim pickings. It really makes you appreciate the good ones.
