Things Don’t Always Go As Planned, Day Two.

  • Total 1199km on bikes
  • Today 81km
  • Kehl to Heidelberg
  • Mostly sunny, high 29c

We were a little late getting away, but we wanted a chill day after yesterday so that’s okay. We stopped for a coffee and a treat before we left Kehl. Very nice. The town of Lichtenau was a perfect lunch and gelato stop. So far so good. Then the heat started to turn on, and a headwind kicked in. Why did we dally so much! As per usual in this type of situation, I ride up front to break the wind so Chris can draft and have a bit easier time. With the heat it was tough going.

We had planned to stop at Camping Durmersheim, and we arrived at the campsite pretty beat up. Once again we were told there was no room for us. This is supposed to be fun!

There’s no use crying about it, our plans had to change.

Even though it was getting late in the day, the decision was made to ride another 12km to the train station in Karlsruhe and catch a train to Heidelberg where we will either get a hotel room, or ride 10km upstream from Heidelberg to a campsite. It had been a couple of hard days riding, and it was time to regroup.

We managed to get a room at the Premier Inn Heidelberg City Centre. This is a much more modern hotel than the last one, but unfortunately the air conditioning doesn’t work, and there’s no alternative room. We have a good sized window, and the concierge has brought us a fan so it shouldn’t be too bad. He has also offered to buy us a couple of free drinks at the bar. Time to go see about that.
